Introducing Derek Hart Enterprises, Inc.

Derek Hart Enterprises, Inc. will provide a consistent flow of multifaceted entertainment from various sources, combined under an artistic guild.  This will entail initially funding and then contracting various talented individuals throughout the USA and internationally, to participate in this exclusive guild.

This collective of creative energy will begin by focusing on developing Derek Hart’s novels into dynamic media alternatives, including, but not limited to, movie & TV screenplays, video/computer games, graphic novels, action figures, comic books, interactive CD’s, music downloads and all other forms of media yet undiscovered or unapplied.

Derek Hart Enterprises cannot be categorized as a traditional publishing house in any way.  We are an entertainment guild, ready to break out onto the consumer-controlled landscape with an impressive product list that already exists.  We have all the people necessary to make expansion and realization a reality.

This is not just about 17 published books and another 20+ in various stages of completion.  That's old thinking.  Publishing and bookstores will become outmoded in their present form.  This is about taking our place in supplying new and innovative entertainment, on every imaginable level, directly to the people who thrive on such deliverables.

This is about scripted video games ready to program and test, movie/TV screenplays written or being written for every book (including production storyboards), action figures being designed and resin prototypes sculpted, along with vibrant marketing, advertising, and PR projects just waiting for the trigger to be pulled.  This is about composing original music for game soundtracks and recognized speaking talent for voiceovers.

This is about a long list of dynamic and Internet-savvy graphic artists currently lined up to provide innovative book covers, graphic novels, comic books, storyboards, videos, and a myriad of alternative media.  They know the social networking arena and can strike with immediate impact.  They believe in the creative force combined under the Derek Hart Enterprises umbrella and have already signed on.

Video Games

With the data showing that 63 percent of the US population is playing games—and 30 percent are playing more this year than last year—gaming is on the move. This acceptance of gaming, along with the expansion of demographics that are spending time and money on gaming, gives credence to rapid and sustained growth.

It used to be that women wouldn't fit the standard image of the video game consumer. Yet the perception of gamers as being mostly young guys isn't so true anymore. Women and girls make up 40 percent of the gamer population, according to the Entertainment Software Association.  Likewise, the female gamer is drawn to adventure and fantasy as much, if not more, than their male counterparts.  Add to that trend the powerful attraction to dragons by the majority of gamers and we think it is a winning combination.

Video games have benefited tremendously by their more diverse audience.  Games aren't just tailored to the desires of teenage boys, but are targeted at an older, more sophisticated audience.  Contemporary games show the value the market places on character development and storyline, along with the usually shoot 'em up and gore.

Secret of the Dragon's Eye gives us a significant niche advantage in today's entertainment market.  Fantasy plots have historically performed very well in the video game industry, as well as the ancillary target customer segments.  Dragons especially do well, since major portions of society believe that the creature once existed.

SECRET OF THE DRAGON’S EYE

LOGLINE: When Gavin, an imaginative twelve-year-old in WWII England, meets a fantastic dragon who appoints him the new keeper of King Arthur’s sword, he must accept the weighty mission and thwart a Nazi invasion.

War can ravage young minds, but there is no rationing creativity and love.

The ancient legends of King Arthur and his knights capture the attention and charge the adventures of the young-at-heart the world over. What if one of those inventive youngsters, eager to escape the traumas of his WWII English countryside, found King Arthur’s sword in his own hands? What if the one who charged him with the fate of the sword was a centuries-old fantastical dragon, a dragon with a sweet tooth?

Derek Hart has completely blended the sweet lure of legend and the hard reality of Nazi air strikes in his popular adventure novel, Secret of the Dragon’s Eye.

The visually stunning, idyllic Cornish coast of England was far away enough to avoid most of the London attacks by Nazi German bombers. But it was close enough to witness fiery lights, the drone of bomb squads overhead and completely upended daily lives. The gentle countryside was teeming with evacuees from London and other stricken areas.

Three very different youngsters discover an incredible bond as they traipse the hills, searching the coastline for Nazi spies, and weighing the consequences of growing up in a war zone. They meet a wise old dragon who entrusts the power of King Arthur’s sword to the hands of Gavin Kane. Gavin’s friends, Emily and Bunty, come along on the magical journey, though sometimes unwillingly.

Legends of King Arthur spilled into Winston Churchill’s wartime speeches. What if the sword, Excalibur, was secretly hunted by the English and German armies who sensed the emotional victory that its capture would ensure? What if it was rolled in a cloth and tucked under the bed of the village boy who wondered what he was to do with it?

Only a dragon can help figure it out. Thaddeus, a dragon with a soft place in his heart for humans because he loves the sugary treats they produce. A dragon who crosses the boundaries of dragon law to relay his wisdom to his young friends. A dragon who is the strongest, fiercest, most beautiful ally these war-torn youngsters could hope for.

When the sword weighs heavily for young Gavin, he lifts it with the strength of his love and determination. To protect his dragon friend and his beloved homeland, Gavin risks everything and musters more courage than he knew he had. Gavin grows up and Winston Churchill gets to feel like a boy again, surrounded by the wonder and power of Arthur.

Action Figures

Our action figures are posable character figurines, made of plastic and other materials, based upon the fantasy novel Secret of the Dragon’s Eye, but also tied to our video game, comic book, graphic novel and movie screenplay currently under development.

The final figure scale for the three human figures is 4” with 2 7” & 10” Dragon figure. The human figures will have 3-point rotational articulation of head, arms and waist.  The dragon figure will have at least 3-points of rotational articulation as well and will be head arms and tail.  Articulating the legs is not the best option for the human figures. CNC milling of sculpts in wax, hand detail sculpting, master silicone casting molds, 1 set of tooling masters for each figure, 3 painted looks like works like prototype figures.

Once the characters have been selected, the actual design process begins with sketches of the proposed figure. The next step is the creation of a clay prototype. This model is made by bending aluminum wires to form the backbone of the figure, known as an armature. The wire form includes the outline of the arms and legs posed in the general stance that the figure will assume. The sculptor then adds clay to the armature to give the basic weight and shape that is desired. The clay may be baked slightly during the prototyping process to harden it. Then, the sculptor uses various tools, such as a wire loop, to carve the clay and shape details on the figure.

After creating the basic form, the sculptor may choose to remove the arms and work on them separately for later attachment. This gives the sculptor more control and allows him to produce finer details on the proto-type. Working with blunt tools, the sculptor shapes the body with as much detail as is desired. During this process, photo and sketch references are used to ensure the figure is as realistic as possible. Some sculptors may even use human models to guide their design work.

After the general body shape is complete, the sculptor adds the finer details, paying close attention to the eyes, nose, and mouth that give the figure its life-like expression. The designer may attach a rough lump of clay on the main figure as a temporary head while the real head is sculpted on a separate armature. This allows the sculptor to finish the figure's facial expressions independently of the body. At this point, the finished head can be attached to the main armature and joined to the body with additional clay. Once the head is attached, the neck and hair are sculpted to properly fit to the figure.

Then, depending on the design of the figure, the costume may be sculpted directly onto the body. However, if a cloth costume or uniform will be added later, the prototype is sculpted without any costume details. During this process, parts of the clay may be covered with aluminum foil to keep it from prematurely drying out. Once everything is completed, the entire figure is baked to harden the clay.

The sculpted prototype is then sent for approval to the manufacturer. Once all design details have been finalized, the prototype is used to make the molds that will form the plastic pieces for the mass-produced figure. The entire sculpting process may take about two weeks, depending on the skill and speed of the sculptor. This process may be repeated several times if revisions must be made to the figure. Several months are typically allowed for this design phase.
